Attorney Brenda arrived less than thirty minutes later carrying a leather briefcase and a bottle of red wine. She had been my father’s attorney for nearly twenty years, but to me, she was more like family.

We sat inside Dad’s study, surrounded by shelves of old books and the faint smell of tobacco that still lingered in the curtains.

I stared at the envelope in my hands.

“You didn’t open it yet?” Brenda asked softly.

I shook my head.

“I was afraid to.”

She sat across from me slowly.

“Your father planned very carefully before he died, Cassandra. If he left you something hidden in the garden… it matters.”

My fingers trembled as I opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

And a flash drive.

The letter began with only one sentence:

“If you are reading this after my funeral, then Simon and Misty moved faster than I expected.”

A chill spread through my chest.

Brenda leaned forward quietly while I continued reading.

Your brother Jesse made a terrible mistake. He trusted Simon more than blood. I tried warning him, but by then they were already planning behind closed doors.

My breathing became uneven.

Dad explained that months before his death, Simon began pressuring him to rewrite the will.

At first it was subtle.

Then aggressive.

Misty apparently convinced Jesse that I planned to “take everything” and cut the family out completely.

“They wanted this house before I was even gone,” the letter read.

Tears burned behind my eyes.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“That flash drive contains security footage from my office.”

I looked up at Brenda instantly.

She nodded slowly.

“Your father installed hidden cameras after he suspected documents were being tampered with.”

My pulse started racing as Brenda plugged the drive into her laptop.

Several video files appeared on the screen.

The first clip showed Simon inside Dad’s office late at night.

Alone.

Searching through paperwork.

The second video was worse.

Misty stood beside Jesse while Simon slid papers across the desk.

“Once Harrison signs this,” Simon said calmly, “Cassandra won’t be able to fight us.”

My stomach dropped.

Jesse looked nervous.

“What if she finds out?”

Misty laughed softly.

“She won’t. By the time the funeral happens, we’ll already own everything.”

I covered my mouth instantly.

Brenda paused the video.

“That,” she said coldly, “is fraud conspiracy.”

I could barely breathe.

My own brother sat there helping them.

Then the final video played.

Dad himself appeared on screen, weak from cancer but fully aware.

He looked directly into the camera.

“If they try forcing Cassandra out after I’m buried, this recording goes to court immediately.”

Silence filled the room.

I started crying before the video even ended.

Not because of the money.

Not because of the house.

Because even while dying, my father knew exactly what they were planning.

And he protected me anyway.

Brenda closed the laptop carefully.

“They have no idea this evidence exists,” she said.

Right then, my phone buzzed.

A message from Misty.

Hope you’re packing already 😊

I stared at the screen for several seconds.

Then slowly smiled for the first time in weeks.

Because tomorrow morning, Misty wasn’t walking into a victory.

She was walking straight into a courtroom disaster that my father had prepared long before his funeral flowers even died.
